Sigh
1994
60” (incl. pedestal) x 18”x 14”
brass and cast bronze, motors, electronics
and mechanism
This piece is intended partly to investigate the exper-
ience of viewing artwork from the point of view of
the art itself and the dullness of a pedestalled life. It
also might be simply about melancholy.
An orchid quietly sits in its pot until every now and
then it releases a deep sigh. The leaves fold against
the stem in a shrug, and the flower’s 25 articulated
parts also work together to stretch and fold the petals
into a shrugging gesture. The breath of the sigh is
produced from a large bellows inside the pedestal.
